The Root Canal Treatment Process

Diagnostics & Preparation

Diagnosing the need for a root canal begins with a thorough clinical exam.  X-rays will be utilized to assess the tooth, and with some testing, the need for a root canal can be determined.

Removing Decay & Infected Pulp

Your experience at your root canal appointment will be similar to having a filling done.  The tooth will be numbed, and all decay will be removed.  Then the root of the tooth will be gradually cleaned and disinfected.

Filling & Sealing

Once all the irritated and infected tissue has been removed, the root of the tooth will be filled with a bio-compatible sealer material.  Because the removal of the root tissue tends to weaken teeth, it is recommended that a crown be placed on the majority of root canal treated teeth.  The preparation of the tooth for the crown can generally be done in the same appointment as your root canal.
